THE BORDEN FAMILY
LLizzie Andrew Borden was born in Fall Rivers, MA on July 19, 1861, to Andrew Jackson Borden, and Sarah Anthony Morse. Lizzie had two sisters, Emma Leonora, and Alice Esther. Alice suffered from hydrocephaly and died at the tender age of two. Emma, the older of the sisters, became the defacto lady of the house when their mother died in 1863.
By June 6, 1865, Andrew married Abby Durfee Gray. Lizzy believed Abby was nothing more than a gold digger, and she certainly wasn’t going to call her “mother.” Lizzie referred to Abby as “Mrs. Borden.” She resented the expensive gifts her father bestowed upon his new wife’s family, including real estate.
